The path, step by step

Every figure below is read from the platform profile it belongs to, not written into this page. Follow a name to see every answer we have for that platform.

  1. 1
Check you are old enough to be PAID, not just old enough to sign up

Fiverr lets 13 to 17 year olds work through a parent or guardian's account and then requires 18 to withdraw. The account opens years before the money can leave it.

    Minimum age

  2. 2
Check your country against the sign-up rules before you build anything

Upwork names the countries it will not take. Fiverr publishes no allowed list at all, only a sanctions clause, so you learn where you stand by trying.

    Where you can sign up

  3. 3
Open the payout account first, in your own country, before your first order

Fiverr has four routes and one of them has been closed to new users since December 2022. Doing this after an order completes is how people end up with a cleared balance they cannot move.

Read what the balance actually is

Fiverr Credits are store credit, not earnings. They cannot be withdrawn or sent to a payment provider, so a client offering to pay in credits is offering you nothing you can spend.

    What you are paid in

Set your first job's price above the withdrawal floor, not above zero

A $4 job clears Fiverr's $1 PayPal minimum and does not clear Upwork's $5.00 local bank minimum. The floor decides whether your first payment exists at all.

Price the exit fee into the job, because it is charged per transfer

The fee is flat, so withdrawing four times costs four times as much as withdrawing once. On small early jobs the sensible move is to let the balance build.

Count the days between approval and spendable money, then plan around that gap

This is the number nobody prints. It is the holding period plus the transfer time, and it decides whether this pays rent this month or next.

Check these five before you sign up

  • Open a PayPal or Payoneer account in your own country before you write a proposal. On Fiverr the payout country list is the provider's, not Fiverr's, so this is where you find out whether you can be paid at all.
  • If you are under 18, check the withdrawal rule and not just the sign-up rule. Fiverr allows a 13 to 17 year old to work through a guardian's account and requires 18 to withdraw.
  • Budget for Connects before your first Upwork proposal. They cost $0.15 each, the number a job needs varies per job, and the 50-Connect new-user bonus is conditional: Upwork says new users may receive it after buying Connects or subscribing to Freelancer Plus, and only if you are eligible.
  • Set your first price above the withdrawal minimum for the route you chose: $1 on Fiverr's PayPal, $5.00 or higher on Upwork's Direct to Local Bank.
  • Put the payment date in your calendar the day the client approves: add 14 days plus 24 hours on Fiverr, five days plus four business days on Upwork fixed-price.

The distance between a client clicking Accept and money you can actually spend is 15 days on Fiverr and about 11 on Upwork. Neither number appears on the page where you sign up, and neither is the number a beginner has in their head, which is "when the client approves".

This page is about the machinery of getting paid. It is not about how much you can earn, because nobody honest can tell you that. What can be told, read off both companies' own help pages, is what happens to a dollar between the moment a client releases it and the moment it is yours.

Check you can be paid, not just that you can join

Upwork's minimum age is 18, or the age of majority in your country if that is higher. Fiverr's rule looks softer and is not. You need to be 18 and of legal age to contract; ages 13 to 17 are allowed only through a parent or guardian's account, and 18 is required to withdraw earnings. Read the second clause twice. A 16 year old can hold an account, take orders and build a balance, and cannot take the money out.

Countries next, and there are two lists rather than one. Upwork is open in 180+ countries, with Iran, North Korea, Cuba, Crimea, LPR and DPR unable to register, and Russia and Belarus suspended in May 2022. Fiverr publishes no allowed-country list at all, only a clause saying it is open worldwide except to users under US, EU or other applicable sanctions or trade restrictions.

The second list is the one that decides whether you get paid, and it is shorter. Upwork's Direct to Local Bank publishes a country and currency list of about 85 entries, from Albania (ALL) to Vietnam (VND). Fiverr publishes nothing equivalent: its withdrawal, PayPal setup and Payoneer setup pages all hand country coverage to the payout provider. So on Fiverr you find out whether you can be paid by opening a PayPal or Payoneer account in your own name, in your own country, before you accept a single order. Do that in the first hour, not after your first delivery.

What it costs to be allowed to compete

Fiverr limits how many listings you can run rather than charging you for them: up to 4 Gigs as a new freelancer, up to 10 at Level 1 and Level 2, up to 30 at Top Rated. Buyers come to the listing, so your cost is the afternoon you spend writing four of them.

Upwork runs the opposite way. You pay to apply. Connects, the tokens you spend to submit a proposal, cost $0.15 each and are sold in bundles, and the number a given job needs varies per job and can change while the post is live. The 50-Connect new-user bonus is not a welcome gift either, and it is not a promise: Upwork says new users may receive it after purchasing Connects or subscribing to Freelancer Plus, and that the offer shows at sign-up only if you are eligible. Plan the first bundle as though it will not arrive.

That is the real difference between the two starting positions. On Fiverr you spend time and wait to be found. On Upwork you spend money on every proposal, won or lost. Both are open accounts at Upwork and Fiverr in under an hour.

What lands is not what the client pays

Fiverr takes a flat 20% of every order. Upwork sets a freelancer service fee of 0% to 15% per contract and shows it to you on the offer before you accept. On a first job priced at $100, that is $20 to Fiverr, or somewhere between nothing and $15 to Upwork depending on the contract.

Then the balance sits still for a while, which is the part that surprises people.

Days from the client's approval to money you can spend

Each bar is a sum of two figures the platform publishes on two different pages: the holding period, on the page cited under the bar, then the transfer time, on the payout page named in the bar's own note. Neither company prints the total anywhere.

The gap nobody adds up

Fiverr, from delivery. The buyer has three days to respond before the order auto-completes, or 14 days on gigs involving shipping. Once the order completes, Fiverr holds the money for a 14 day clearing period. Then you withdraw: PayPal charges no fee, has a $1 minimum, and puts the money in your account inside 24 hours. Counting from the moment the order completes, that is 14 days plus one, so 15 days. Counting from the moment you handed over the work, up to 18.

Upwork, fixed price. The client funds the milestone into escrow before you start, approves it when the work is done, and the funds release five days after that approval. Withdraw by Direct to Local Bank outside the U.S. and the transfer takes four business days. In an ordinary week that lands about 11 calendar days after the client clicked approve.

Upwork, hourly. Here the clock is not attached to your work at all, it is attached to the calendar. Hours billed Monday to Sunday become available ten days after that week closes, and then the transfer takes its four business days. Work you did on a Monday is money you can spend roughly 22 days later.

So the three honest answers to "how long until I get paid" are 11, 15 and 22 days, and every one of them is longer than the platform's own signup flow suggests. If you are counting on this money for something with a date attached, count backwards from the withdrawal, not forwards from the job.

The withdrawal is the third fee

Two costs are visible before you start: the commission, and on Upwork the Connects. The third one waits at the exit.

Fiverr's PayPal route costs nothing and has a $1 minimum. Upwork's ACH to a U.S. bank is free if your tax address is in the U.S.; if it is not, Upwork's payout table now reads "2.99" per transfer, effective 1 September 2026, printed without a currency symbol. Direct to Local Bank outside the U.S. is $0.99 per transfer, with a minimum of $5.00 or higher depending on location. Upwork's PayPal, Payoneer and M-Pesa fees are not published at all, so any specific figure you find quoted for those came from somewhere other than Upwork.

At the start the minimum matters more than the fee. A first job worth $4 clears Fiverr's $1 PayPal floor and does not clear Upwork's $5.00 local bank floor. And since the fee is charged per transfer rather than per dollar, four small withdrawals cost four times what one costs. Let the balance build, then move it once.

Who owes you the money, and in what form

Upwork Inc. is a Delaware corporation headquartered in Palo Alto, California, listed on Nasdaq as UPWK and filing annual 10-K reports with the SEC. Fiverr International Ltd. sits in Tel Aviv, Israel, parent of Fiverr Inc. in New York and Fiverr Limited in Limassol, Cyprus.

The practical half of that is what the balance is made of. On Upwork, earnings sit as a withdrawable balance and move to a bank account in your local currency. On Fiverr, cash goes to a payout provider account, and Fiverr Credits are a separate thing entirely: store credit that cannot be withdrawn or moved to a payment provider. A client offering to settle in credits is offering you something you can only spend back on the platform.

What to do today

Open the payout account in your own country. Then check your age against the withdrawal rule rather than the signup rule. Then write four Fiverr listings, or buy the smallest Connects bundle and send proposals with it, and price whatever you offer above the withdrawal floor of the route you picked. Put the payment date in your calendar on the day the client approves, not the day you deliver.

The first job is not the milestone worth celebrating. The first withdrawal that lands is.
