Amazon Pays a Cut of What Your Readers Buy Within 24 Hours of a Click. Most Beginners Lose the Account Before the First Check

Why this pays

Affiliate marketing is a link with your name in it. A reader clicks, buys, and the shop pays you a share. Almost nothing in that sentence is under your control except the pages the link sits on and the paperwork around it, and the paperwork is where most beginners lose the account before the first commission arrives.

The play is not "get a link". It is: write pages for a reader who is one day from buying, put the tag and both disclosures on them, do the tax interview the same day you join, and reach three sales before the 180-day clock runs out. Get through the review with the account intact and the pages pay twice, Amazon and AdSense.

The play, in three lines

1. Write about ten posts, each for a reader choosing between two specific things, and publish the first three before you press Join.
2. Join Amazon Associates, take the tax interview the same day, tag every Amazon link, and put both disclosures on the page.
3. Reach three qualifying sales inside 180 days, then add AdSense to the same pages as a second line.

The path above walks every click. What follows is the reasoning behind each step and the numbers you quote from.

Where the money comes from

• Amazon, for a sale you referred. A share of qualifying items placed in the reader's cart within 24 hours of arriving through your tagged link; an item already in the cart still counts if the order is placed before the cart expires, usually after 90 days. Paid about 60 days after the end of the month.
• Google, for the ads beside the same posts. Publishers receive 80% of AdSense for Content revenue after the advertiser platform takes its fee, about 68% when advertisers buy through Google Ads, released at $100 with no holds.
• Later, a buyer of the site. The posts, the readers and the domain are yours; the accounts are not transferable. The content-site page reads what the marketplaces ask for.

The pain you are selling the cure for

The reader is choosing between two models of the same thing and cannot tell from the shop's page which one fits them. They want someone who has looked at both to say so in plain words, and they will buy the same evening once they know. A page that does that is worth a commission; a page about whether to take up the hobby at all sends clicks that go cold. The ten posts are the first kind, and the 24-hour window is why.

Step one: the posts come before the application

• Amazon's review page is specific, and it looks only after you have referred three qualifying sales. Every site listed must have original content of substance even when the advertising is removed; the rule of thumb is at least 10 posts, generally recent within the last 60 days, publicly available, on a website you own.
• A social page instead must be an accepted network (Facebook pages and open groups, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, TikTok, Twitch), listed by exact URL, established, with a substantive number of organic followers, in most cases at least 500.
• Rejections: untagged links, unoriginal or thin content, and misuse of Amazon trademarks, including copying Amazon customer reviews. A rejected application cannot be reassessed.
• So the pages are built first, at that standard, and the Join button is pressed second.

Step two: apply, then the tax interview

• Joining is free; the button reads Join Now for Free.
• The first thing inside Associates Central is a form, not a link. Every Associate must provide taxpayer identification through an online tax interview validated against IRS records, and no commission is paid until it is done: hover over your email address at the top, Account Settings, View/Provide Tax Information, Take Interview. Status shows under Payment Information.
• Outside the US, the interview is where the W-8BEN with a treaty claim goes; without it Amazon must withhold up to 30% of US referral commissions.

Step three: tagged links and two disclosures

• Your Associate ID has the form abcd-20. A tagged link is an Amazon product URL with it embedded, and it is the only kind of link that earns anything. Untagged links are a rejection reason, and the tags must sit on the sites declared in your application, so keep that list current.
• Next to every link: a disclosure a reader notices without hunting, as simple as (paid link), #ad or #CommissionsEarned.
• Somewhere clear and conspicuous on the site: As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases, word for word. For social media the sentence is associated with the account.
• The disclosure must be in the medium of the recommendation: text with text, voice with voice. Two disclosures, both required.

Step four: write for the last 24 hours of a decision

• Commission is earned on items placed in the cart within 24 hours of the click. The page that pays is the one for a reader choosing between two specific models, with the differences that matter laid out.
• Ten posts of that kind are the application, the review and the income.

Step five: three sales, then the wait

• Amazon evaluates the application once three qualifying sales have been referred; personal orders do not count. Not enough inside 180 days and the application is withdrawn. The clock starts when you apply, not when you are ready.
• Approved: commission is paid about 60 days after the end of the month it was earned, by direct deposit, Amazon gift certificate or check. Below $10 a direct deposit or gift certificate balance rolls into the next month; the floor for a check is $100 and cannot be set lower.
• A commission earned on the 3rd of March is money in early June.

Step six: AdSense on the same pages

• Free to join. Create the account, enter your payments information, optionally preview the ads, connect your site; Google reviews the payments information and the whole site, usually in a few days, sometimes 2 to 4 weeks, and emails the activation status; then set up ads.
• AdSense only runs on a site whose HTML source you can edit, and Google will not set up an account for a site it cannot verify you own. One more reason the site is yours rather than a page on someone else's platform.
• 80% of AdSense for Content revenue, about 68% when advertisers buy through Google Ads, released at $100 with no holds. The own-site pages read the traffic bars of the other ad networks, which start far above zero.

The clause that ends it

• Amazon can end the Operating Agreement at any time, with or without cause, on 7 calendar days' written notice, and every licence granted under it ends with it.
• After approval, with no commission income for three years, Amazon can charge an account maintenance fee, the lesser of $10 or the unpaid accrued commission, and close the account for dormancy.
• Google can cut ad serving or disable an AdSense account at any time for policy breaches; a disabled account is barred for good.
• None of this is a reason not to start. It is the reason the pages, not the account, are the asset.

What travels with you

• Nothing Amazon-supplied. Amazon content on your site must be deleted or destroyed once Amazon says it is no longer available for your use.
• The Associates account cannot be assigned or transferred, by operation of law or otherwise, without Amazon's prior written approval. AdSense account ownership cannot be transferred either.
• The posts, the readers and the domain are yours.

What to do today

1. Write down the ten posts, each for a reader choosing between two things. Publish the first three.
2. Only when readers are arriving: join, take the tax interview, tag the links, put both disclosures on the page, and put the 180-day date in the calendar.
3. Apply to AdSense on the same pages.
4. The first check is months away; whether there is a check at all is decided by the pages you write this week.
