FIG 1%
Fiverr's single rate sits above every Upwork rate published here.
Fiverr takes 20% of every order you complete. Flat, no tiers, no volume discount, and it applies to gig extras and tips as well as the base price. Upwork sets a freelancer service fee per contract, somewhere between 0% and 15%, and shows you the number on the offer before you accept it. So Upwork's worst case sits five points under Fiverr's only case, and its best case is nothing at all.
The client side is closer, and messier. Both platforms now charge the buyer, and both charge something extra just to open a contract.
Everything below came off Upwork's and Fiverr's own help centers on 6 September 2026, except the company history, which comes from Upwork's SEC prospectus. Several of those articles were edited inside the previous two weeks. If you're building a rate card on these numbers, re-check them quarterly.
This trips up more people than it should, because both old brands still get searched. Upwork's own SEC prospectus lays out the sequence: the holding company was incorporated in Delaware in December 2013 "prior to and in connection with the combination of Elance, Inc. and oDesk Corporation", renamed itself Elance-oDesk, Inc. in March 2014, and became Upwork Inc. in May 2015. The same filing says the two companies "combined in 2014".
Migration off the old Elance platform onto the new Upwork one began in August 2015. The filing never states a date when consolidation finished, so the "single platform since 2016" line you'll see repeated elsewhere isn't something Upwork has published. Treat it as unconfirmed.
Fiverr has no equivalent tangle. It was incorporated in Israel in April 2010 and has traded under one name since.
| Upwork | Fiverr | |
|---|---|---|
| Standard rate | 0% to 15% per contract | 20% of every order |
| Set by | Upwork, per contract, before you bid | Fixed platform-wide |
| Changes mid-contract? | No, it locks when the offer is sent | No |
| Volume or loyalty discount | None published | None |
| Applies to tips and extras | Yes, all earnings | Yes, explicitly |
Upwork's current article states one 0% to 15% per-contract range with no tiers. If a page tells you Upwork still runs a 20/10/5 sliding scale, or a flat 10%, it's out of date. The fee is refunded proportionally if the client gets a refund, which is worth knowing before you agree to one.
There are carve-outs. Direct Contracts, where you bring your own client, run at 5%, and at 0% if you hold an active Freelancer Plus membership. Enterprise clients are "typically" 10%. Upwork Payroll and Any Hire contracts carry no freelancer service fee at all.
Fiverr's 20% shows up in three separate help articles, including the guidance for Fiverr Pro sellers, who are told to factor the same 20% commission into their prices. There's no premium tier that buys you a lower rate.
One cost Fiverr doesn't have: bidding. Upwork sells Connects, the tokens you spend submitting proposals, so an Upwork freelancer pays to apply whether or not they win. On Fiverr the buyer comes to your listing.
Fee schedules sit behind a login on both. Upwork and Fiverr.
FIG 2%
Percentages only; Fiverr adds $3.50 on orders under $200 and $5 to open an hourly order, while Upwork adds $0.99 to $14.99 once per contract.
Here's the part that gets left out of most head-to-head pages. Fiverr charges clients a service fee of 5.5% of the purchase amount plus a $3.50 fee on orders under $200. It's charged per transaction, so an extra bought later and a tip added at the end each carry their own fee. Older articles say 5.5% plus $2.50 under $100. That threshold is stale.
Fiverr also charges a $5 order initiation fee on hourly orders, paid once the client accepts the custom offer, before work starts. In some regions Fiverr now displays all-in prices, with the service fee already folded into the number on the gig listing, so a buyer there won't see the fee broken out at all.
Upwork's Basic plan charges clients up to 7.99% on payments, dropping to 3% for eligible U.S. clients paying by bank account. The fee covers fixed-price and hourly contracts, Project Catalog, bonuses, Direct Contracts, expenses, Consultations, Payroll and miscellaneous charges, and it isn't refunded even when the underlying payment is reversed. On top of that sits the Contract Initiation Fee: $0.99 to $14.99, charged once per contract rather than per milestone, at first payment on hourly work or at funding on fixed-price.
That fee isn't returned after payment, even if the client wins a dispute. The one exception Upwork publishes is a fixed-price milestone that never gets released, in which case the initiation fee comes back.
Two caveats on the 7.99%. Upwork's Business Plus client plan runs on its own fee sheet, so a quoted client rate may not be the Basic one. And Upwork ran a 0% marketplace fee offer on new Customer Service, Data Entry, and Project Management & Market Research contracts started between 9 April and 28 August 2026. That window is shut. Contracts opened inside it still carry the reduced fee for six months, so an existing client's rate can be lower than 7.99% even now.

Upwork's cheapest route is ACH to a U.S. bank, free for freelancers with a U.S. tax address. That changed for everyone else on 1 September 2026, five days before this page was checked. Upwork's payout table now lists "2.99 for Freelancers with International Tax Address (Effective September 1st, 2026)". Note the missing currency symbol, which is Upwork's own formatting, not a typo here. Every other line in that table is labeled USD.
The rest: Direct to Local Bank outside the U.S. costs $0.99, arriving within four business days, with a minimum of $5 "or higher depending on your location" and per-country caps. A U.S. dollar wire is $50 per transfer. Instant Pay for U.S. freelancers is $2. Upwork does not publish its PayPal, Payoneer or M-Pesa fees anywhere public. All three help pages say only "a small fee per transfer" and point you to your account settings, so any specific figure you find quoted for those is somebody's guess.
Fiverr publishes a full table. PayPal is free, $1 minimum, money in your account inside 24 hours. Bank transfer through Payoneer takes $1 off the top and won't run below $20. A straight Payoneer account withdrawal is dearer, $3, though it lets you go as low as $10. Nothing above $5,000 in one shot.
A rule worth getting right: a Fiverr withdrawal method can be linked to only one Fiverr account, and your account can hold only one method per provider. Bank Transfer and the Fiverr Revenue Card both come from Payoneer, so you can't hold both. You can hold PayPal and a bank transfer together. Fiverr also notes that the amount landing in your account may be less than requested because of currency conversion, and those charges come from PayPal or Payoneer rather than from Fiverr.
Fiverr sits on your money for 14 days after an order completes. Only then does it clear. Pro, Top Rated and Seller Plus sellers get a shorter period, though the main freelancer article says only "shorter" without giving a number there. Buyers have three days to respond after delivery before an order auto-completes, or 14 days on gigs involving shipping.
Upwork runs two clocks. Fixed-price money is funded upfront into escrow, then released after the client's review window and a five-day security hold. Hourly work follows the weekly billing cycle instead, with funds available ten days after the week closes.
If you hire an Upwork freelancer off the platform inside the first two years, Upwork charges a conversion fee of 13.5% of estimated annual earnings, calculated as the hourly rate multiplied by 2,080 hours. Upwork's own worked examples: converting a freelancer billing $30 an hour costs $8,424, and one at $50 an hour costs $14,040. Time-based and activity-based discounts exist.
That's the published formula, stated as Upwork states it. Fiverr's fee pages checked here carry no equivalent charge.
If you're a freelancer choosing on cost, Upwork wins on the headline rate and loses on friction: you pay to bid, and the client pays a contract initiation fee that can make you a marginally more expensive hire. Fiverr's 20% is simple and unavoidable, and buyers arrive without you spending anything to find them.
One number stayed out of reach. Upwork's Freelancer Plus price isn't published anywhere on the help center, which routes you to in-account pricing instead. Anyone quoting a figure got it from somewhere other than Upwork.
